With a family, a job as a teacher, and running <strong data-start=\"316\" data-end=\"335\">my B&amp;B Berglust<\/strong>, where do I find the time? After all, taking care of the <strong data-start=\"393\" data-end=\"400\">B&amp;B<\/strong> is the most important thing, and it involves a lot of tasks:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"463\" data-end=\"642\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"463\" data-end=\"476\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"465\" data-end=\"476\">Maintenance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"477\" data-end=\"487\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"479\" data-end=\"487\">Cleaning<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"488\" data-end=\"533\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"490\" data-end=\"533\">Bringing laundry to and from the laundromat<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"569\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"536\" data-end=\"569\">Occasionally posting on Instagram<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"570\" data-end=\"586\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"572\" data-end=\"586\">Administration<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"587\" data-end=\"642\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"589\" data-end=\"642\">And most importantly, maintaining contact with guests<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"644\" data-end=\"965\">Staying in touch with guests always makes me happy, and the first thing I do after they leave is read their experiences. Thankfully, everyone is always very satisfied, and that\u2019s what you do it for, isn\u2019t it? <strong data-start=\"853\" data-end=\"868\">Hospitality<\/strong> is truly my top priority. That\u2019s also the theme of this blog:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"644\" data-end=\"965\"><strong data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"965\">Hospitality: How do you do it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"967\" data-end=\"1419\"><strong data-start=\"967\" data-end=\"982\">Hospitality<\/strong> is a relative concept and means something different for everyone. The most important thing is to make guests feel welcome, at home, and like the accommodation was prepared with care just for them. Whether you&#8217;re planning a <strong data-start=\"1206\" data-end=\"1234\">romantic weekend getaway<\/strong> or just want to relax, I always pay extra attention to small details: a personal note to welcome them, towels folded into swans, a bottle of wine on the table, and a chocolate truffle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1421\" data-end=\"1807\">I\u2019ve also created a booklet with instructions about the <strong data-start=\"1477\" data-end=\"1484\">B&amp;B<\/strong> and an information folder about activities in the area and the city of <strong data-start=\"1556\" data-end=\"1569\">Rotterdam<\/strong>. Coffee and tea are always restocked, and if guests miss something, I\u2019ll buy it for them. For instance, once I placed a bottle of wine but realized I didn\u2019t have a corkscrew\u2014now I do, of course. I also purchased a hairdryer upon request.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"2028\">You want to ensure your guests have a great time, and that\u2019s different for everyone. Some guests enjoy a chat, while others prefer privacy. It\u2019s a bit of a balancing act each time, but that\u2019s what makes it so enjoyable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2030\" data-end=\"2258\">Last summer, we went to Indonesia as a family and got to experience what it\u2019s like to be guests ourselves. My expectations were high because <strong data-start=\"2171\" data-end=\"2186\">hospitality<\/strong> is so important to me, and I expect the same from other accommodations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2260\" data-end=\"2494\">We visited beautiful places and stayed in a variety of accommodations, ranging from luxurious to very basic. But luxury doesn\u2019t necessarily equate to <strong data-start=\"2410\" data-end=\"2425\">hospitality<\/strong>. If you book something fancy, the expectations are naturally higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2496\" data-end=\"2878\">Yet there was one accommodation that stood out head and shoulders above the rest.<br data-start=\"2577\" data-end=\"2580\" \/>Thomas Leaf Monkey, owned by Brian in Sumatra, was truly amazing. The accommodation was quite basic and not at all luxurious. No air conditioning, just a fan, no private shower or toilet, but shared facilities outside. Yet it was an incredible place because the <strong data-start=\"2842\" data-end=\"2857\">hospitality<\/strong> was so overwhelming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2880\" data-end=\"2978\">From the Netherlands, I had already been in contact with Brian, and he arranged everything for me:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2980\" data-end=\"3170\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2980\" data-end=\"3065\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2982\" data-end=\"3065\">He picked us up from our previous accommodation, a three-hour drive from his place.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3066\" data-end=\"3117\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3068\" data-end=\"3117\">He organized a well-prepared two-day jungle tour.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3118\" data-end=\"3170\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3120\" data-end=\"3170\">He provided a complete meal after our jungle trek.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3172\" data-end=\"3491\">The jungle tour was absolutely fantastic. We had two friendly, helpful guides who knew everything about the jungle. We saw 12 orangutans, lots of other monkeys, and beautiful birds. Along the way, they prepared food for us\u2014not just any food, but beautifully presented fruit on large leaves, carved into stunning shapes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3493\" data-end=\"3807\">For dinner, we had a full Indonesian rice table that tasted amazing\u2014probably the best meal we had during our entire trip, and all in the middle of the jungle. (The cooks had to wade through a river for hours to bring the food from the village to our jungle camp, where they cooked primitively for about 20 people.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3809\" data-end=\"4071\">When we returned, Brian treated us to a wonderful meal because it was his birthday. We enjoyed delicious fish, laughed, sang, and played guitar. But we wanted to do it in a <strong>way that felt right.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We absolutely did not want to ride elephants, watch them perform tricks, or see animals being made to work for tourists. It was<strong> important to us that the elephants were well cared<\/strong> for and allowed to live as naturally as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>My daughters therefore started looking for different organisations<\/strong> and places where we could see elephants. They read reviews and looked carefully at how the animals were treated. Eventually, we found a small accommodation where three elephants lived.<\/p>\n<p>Before our stay, we contacted the accommodation through Booking.com to ask if we could feed the elephants. We received confirmation that we could, so we were curious to see what the place would be like.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section out to be a little different when we arrived<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-932c0a7 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"932c0a7\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-157b83a\" data-id=\"157b83a\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>When we arrived, we actually couldn&#8217;t do anything with the elephants. We weren&#8217;t allowed to feed them, and we couldn&#8217;t simply walk around with them either.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, that was a little disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>The owner explained that the following day, for an additional fee, we could feed the elephants, walk with them and even swim with them in the river.<\/p>\n<p>The only thing was that none of this had been mentioned beforehand.<\/p>\n<p>So we talked to him about it. Not angrily, but because we felt this should have been communicated more clearly. Especially for people who deliberately choose a place because they care about animal welfare.<\/p>\n<p>It turned into a very pleasant conversation. The owner was incredibly kind and understood exactly what we meant.<\/p>\n<p>Since I run a B&amp;B myself, I explained how important I think it is for guests to know exactly what they can expect before they arrive. The owner told us that they were fed approximately every hour and were free to walk around.<\/p>\n<p>What stood out to us most was how gently he treated the animals. They had also been beaten.<\/p>\n<p>According to the owner, the rules in Thailand have changed and elephants can no longer be used for the same kind of heavy labour.
